Frequently-Asked Questions

I’ve received a visit/violation from the FDNY. What do I do?

As per the FDNY, drapes are required to be certified, either by flame treatment, or by testing. DK issues certificates upon testing, which is required every 3 years. For drapes that are cotton, testing is required every year, with treatment occuring every third year. If you receive a violation, please contact us and we will come to test your drapes and determine if further action is needed in order to issue a valid certificate .

Can you test my Inherently Flame-Retardant drapes?

Yes, members of our Fabrication team are C-15 certified and are able to perform the NFPA 705 field test to determine if your drapes meet the standards set forth by the FDNY. IFR goods are made with
fabric that already meets NFPA and other fire code standards, and should pass testing. However, if they fail, cleaning may be required to restore IFR Status.

How often should my drapes be tested?

IFR Status remains for the life of each drape. However, certificates issued by DK/QE for IFR draperies are valid for a period of three years, after which time testing is required. This is recommended by the FDNY and must be maintained to avoid violations.

Do you perform testing on cotton goods?

We can test cotton soft goods, but we do not offer treatment at this time. We recommend replacing cotton goods with IFR, which will last longer and require less maintenance, making the switch cost effective.

Why should I clean my drapes?

All drapes act as filters, absorbing things like dust, allergens, and other airborne pollutants. This can create a fertile environment for dust mites, which over time, can cause damage by eating away at the fabric. Embedded dirt and dust combined with light/sunlight can also cause dry rot. Drapes that are not visibly dirty can still need cleaning, not only to pass flame testing, but to prolong lifespan.

How should I clean my drapes?

Many people will simply steam their drapes. However, this causes dust and dirt to become further embedded into the fabric. Steaming should only be used to de-wrinkle. We can successfully remove surface dust/dirt/pollutants etc with our machines and safe cleaning agents to restore IFR status and leave your drapes looking great! For deep cleaning/dry cleaning, contact our team for in-house options and pricing.

How often should my drapes be cleaned?

Theater draperies should be cleaned at least every five years, but due to conditions such as dust accumulation, they may be cleaned more often if they fail NFPA Testing. Drapes in schools, offices, and other public areas may be cleaned every 1-3 years.

How long does cleaning take?

Our technicians will work diligently and efficiently on each drape. A standard-sized event drape can take between 1-3 hours to clean.

When do I receive a certificate for my drapes?

Certificates can be issued by Drape Kings upon completion of testing, or cleaning and re-testing, and after payment is made.
